Trinity's Water Project

Go to the sink, turn on the tap and get a drink. What if your death were in that glass?

Every day, more than 4,300 children under age 5 die because of bad drinking water and poor sanitation.

Numbers such as that one from the World Health Organization haunt John Hays' sleepless nights. But they also challenge him.

John Hays, water superintendent from Washington, Iowa, has committed his singular mind and unflinching faith to clearing up drinking water worldwide. With help from some former partners he perfected a handheld device that, in a few minutes, can turn a tablespoon of salt into enough chlorine to disinfect a day's worth of water for 100 people.

Already surgeons in Tanzania, village leaders in Swaziland and farmers in Nicaragua are using the Khlor Gen 3000. Soon the first units will arrive in Haiti and Uganda. And within months, Hays' company, International Water Management Systems, should have larger chlorine generators running in nine towns in Central and South America, protecting the health of thousands.

"The Bible says that when you give water in Jesus' name, you give it directly to Jesus," Hays said. "That's a promise to me. Someday, Jesus will look me in the eye and say you gave me water. That's my motivation."

It is that promise that Fr Mitchell Smith of Trinity Episcopal Parish is going to help fulfill.  He has pledged to fund over 50 units from Iowa Episcopal Churches within the Iowa Diocese and and has already gotten the Diocese of Missouri onboard with his pledge and now plans to fund over 50.

A $300 donation will buy a unit, battery pack, solar panel and kit.  Enough to clean thousands of gallons of water.
